VIVA Placitas: Village in a Village, is a volunteer and membership based 501c3 non-profit designed to help us age within our homes in Placitas by providing needed services. It is part of the village movement that has emerged in the last decade from the organizational field of support services for older adults (Prof. A. Scharlach, UC Berkeley). The village movement is an option to help our society cope with an aging population. VIVA Placitas: Village in a Village is an active community of seniors "taking care of each other" rather than being "taken care of".
We service the unincorporated 29.7 miles called Placitas, which actually means "little plazas" and describes perfectly our disbursed neighborhoods and the places we call home. Placitas is home to over 5,000 people, 32 percent of whom are age 54 or older. Attracted to Placitas as a place to age because of its spectacular scenery, low crime, diversity, and proximity to the metropolitan areas of Santa Fe and Albuquerque, we wish to remain here, in our own homes, for as long as possible.
Sadly, but in order to act with an abundance of caution, the board of directors has made the difficult decision to postpone the launch of VIVA Placitas until our cdommunity is less susceptible to Covid-19. We hope to celebrate a successful opening when it is safe to do so.
